The Rocket Model of the Brain: Helping Youth to Regulate Emotions
Tuesday, November 18, 2025 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM
It helps to have an easy model to help youth think about how their brain works. This workshop will introduce a model for helping kids understand the different areas of their brain in very simplistic terms, think how their coping skills help them to negotiate to higher levels of thinking, and see what happens when the negative coping skills get deployed. An important principal of this workshop is that we need to have all areas of the brain firing to get to our highest level of functioning. We often focus more on making sure that the prefrontal cortex is working while minimizing the value of the other parts. The workshop will cover the basic structure and science of the brain and allow participants to practice using their own simply drawn rocket model. This is a simple tool, once learned that can easily be used with youth, and even adults to help them think through their reactions and coping skills to keep them emotionally regulated.
